Dan Ariely - Misbelief: What Makes Rational People Believe Irrational Things
In this talk, Dan Ariely, a psychology and behavioral economics expert at Duke University, discusses his book "Misbelief." He recounts how during the early days of COVID-19, he was deeply involved in assisting governments and companies with various social science challenges. However, he received disturbing emails accusing him of being involved in nefarious activities due to a misunderstood past trauma. This prompted him to delve into the phenomenon of misbeliefs.
He identifies four components contributing to misbeliefs: emotional (primarily stress), personality, cognitive, and social factors. Stress, particularly the kind that arises from feeling a lack of understanding about the world, pl...

I am just beginning to read your book. Thank you for your willingness to talk to "white" people and share the Black experience, as well as help us grow to interact with more respect and awareness. I am just beginning to realize i have much more to learn about white supremacy and its impact, especially recently, on Black america, and to learn how i can take an active role in dismantling white supremacy in the US.

This is not a good example. She talks about a teacher breaking the rules and recruiting the students as lookouts for the principle. Are we to gather from this that teachers that break the rules are the ones that we should follow?

You defend this position if you're a Marxist. Open Borders describes lack of border control checks which is happening with the millions of people entering the Southern and Northern borders of the USA and the UK. Soros funded bollox in the USA, nothing less. Typical you mentioning letting in Einstein, such a cheesy example. Your logic is flawed. "Once you calm down", just so patronising and ending with fake humility.

I don't understand why you frame the time period of transition as beginning after the administration of HW. In fact, the hostility and otherism begin with the first campaign of HW and his henchmen Lee Atwater, on his deathbed regretted what he had done to the country in that campaign. We had Willie Horton. We had the prissy New Englander HW pretending that the word liberal is obscene and could only be hinted at with the letter L out of his pure lips. Yes, he was not a populist in the sense that he had any connection with working class people, which he did not, but he percolated in a party that was already making home for the likes of Pat Buchanan. HW was the beginning of the turn of the Republican party toward nationalistic populism

It’s so interesting how folks want to stay stuck where they are; they never want to “think critically,” but rather hold on to hate because it is seemingly less challenging and far less scary. I can’t believe, know, think differently than I do right now. How very sad for you and more importantly, our country.

Not sure what made this pop up in my list, but figured it was worth a quick watch. I always want to listen to someone who can articulate a position that I disagree with. It's VERY hard to do these days, because no one wants to have actual discussions. Then, I started watching and realized I don't disagree with you at all, at least in a theoretical sense. 2 years of econ grad school decades ago still rattles around in my brain, and I believe that any artificial constructs, including movement among borders, leads to inefficiencies. So, the world, as a whole, is better off with complete freedom of movement. An equilibrium will eventually take place. I get that. But, I think people (and maybe you?) will conflate that argument with what is happening today at the border, saying the huge influx done outside of the normal process is acceptable or that it is the same as the open border solution you propose. It absolutely is not. The problem is that the current system has a self-selection mechanism that filters what type of people come in. And, I think any border proposal, in the way you refer to it, must still have some order. Countries need to have some idea who is in their country. So, I'm not sure what my point is other than curious whether you are using your argument for open borders to argue that the current situation is acceptable?

The First Amendment was intended to prevent the government from engaging in censorship and prior restraint. Unfortunately, Justice Black and his colleagues in NY Times v. Sullivan gave the media a license to defame people with impunity, so long as the victims of defamation are deemed to be "public persons" whatever that means. The recent Sarah Palin case is a perfect example of the Sullivan precedent giving the media a license to defame the innocent. The most poignant example of course is Richard Jewell. He was a hero who got savaged by the media.
